PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A REFURBISHED PART - NOT NEW.

The Harvest Right Oil Free Scroll Vacuum Pump assembly consists of two main parts - the motor and the pump.  When the elastomeric spider insert in the Lovejoy (jaw) coupling between the motor and the pump degrades or fails, the pump loses the mechanical damping and alignment buffer between the motor and the scroll pump head.

Here are some of the symptoms that indicate that you may need to replace the spider with one of these refurbished ones.  Note that the spider is not included in the pump rebuild kit and must be ordered separately.

Please note that this is a refurbished part, so you may notice some grease or other signs that they are not brand new.  These spiders are pulled from new pumps that are returned to the factory, and they should be fully serviceable.

Acoustic Changes

  • Metallic clacking or chattering: A distinct rhythmic rattling, clicking, or knocking sound, most pronounced during initial startup, shutdown, or as the pump reaches deeper vacuum levels (higher mechanical resistance).
  • Metal-on-metal grinding: As the rubber or urethane cushion disintegrates, the intermeshed metal jaws of the motor hub and pump shaft hub make direct contact.

Mechanical Play and Physical Debris

  • Rotational backlash (slop): With the unit unplugged, rotating the motor cooling fan or shaft back and forth by hand reveals noticeable loose play before the pump mechanism engages.
  • Elastomer dust or shavings: Black, red, or yellow rubber/urethane powder, flakes, or shredded chunks accumulating under or around the coupling adapter housing vents.

Vibration and Thermal Issues

  • Elevated housing vibration: Increased operational vibration through the pump chassis, mounting feet, and connected vacuum line due to torque misalignment.
  • Excessive heat at the coupling housing: Friction from metal-on-metal jaw contact or compressed/deformed elastomer generates localized heat between the motor and pump head.

Operational and Electrical Symptoms

  • Sluggish or erratic pull-down: Inefficient torque transfer or cyclical binding can prevent the scroll mechanism from sustaining continuous RPM, leading to slower mTorr drop rates.
  • Motor hard-starting or thermal tripping: Jammed fragments of a destroyed spider wedging inside the coupling jaws can create enough rotational resistance to trigger the motor’s thermal overload switch or breaker.

There are different sizes of coupling hub and spider in different models and ages of pumps.  You should measure the exact outside diameter of the coupling hub to determine which size of refurbished spider you need.  The modern Harvest Right pump versions have a 1.75" o.d. coupling hub for the regular size pump used with the small, medium, and large freeze dryers, and a 2.11: o.d. coupling hub for the XL size pump used with the extra large freeze dryer .  This exploded diagram of the pump assembly shows the coupling hub and spider within a red outline.

Note: Some very old models of the pump use a coupling which is significantly smaller, with a coupling hub o.d. of 1.36" - neither of the spiders on this page will fit those older pumps, thus the need to measure before placing your order.
