Hi Sharon, The Royal Victorian Orangerie's structural certification includes: Wind Load: 115 MPH (3-second gusts) Snow Load: 28.5 PSF (ground-snow load) Roof Live Load: 20 PSF Some general thoughts about snow and wind damage considerations: As a basic rule of thumb, typical snow weighs approximately 15 pounds per cubic foot, or 1.25 pounds per inch of depth per square foot. Depending on moisture content and compaction, a cubic foot of snow can weigh from as little as 5-7 pounds for dry light fluffy snow, to 12-16 pounds for fresh wet snow, to 20 pounds or more for drifted compacted snow. NOTE: Ice build-up on the roof is very heavy, and would need to be added to these weight estimates. We recommend clearing snow from your greenhouse roof immediately, rather than waiting for it to build up. This also allows sun to warm the greenhouse more quickly. I can't stress enough that our Hoklartherm RIGA greenhouses are much better suited for areas with potentially high snow loads (anything over 2 feet, and up to 30 pounds per square foot) or heavy winds (up to 85 mph or more). However they, including the ones with higher roof pitches like the EOS models, like all others such greenhouses up to and in their price range, are NOT made for 3 feet of snow at one time. For any greenhouse, you can and should also install some additional damage prevention in heavy snow situations, such as: add additional roof supports, heavy portal frames (custom option on some Janssens models), place some 2"x4" boards as poles to support your ridge beam, add screws at each end of the roof rafters, add cross supports or spandrels (triangular corner braces) to the rafter/eave joint and ridge (custom option on some greenhouses). We've even seen a case where a customer built an entire additional internal wooden frame inside the greenhouse to provide maximum structural support. Regardless of your choice, you should add the greenhouse to your homeowner's insurance policy. As an extreme example of what can go wrong: A customer had a Janssens VI 34 (large Victorian gable roof model) at their second home high in the Sierras in CA, and it was fine for many years. This past winter their greenhouse was destroyed by over 12 feet of snow. Unfortunately they did not have any homeowners insurance coverage. They were not able to look after this greenhouse to keep it cleared of snow. We feel sympathy for them but there is nothing we can do under warranty in this situation.
