Anchoring Your Janssens Greenhouse

All Greenhouses must be securely anchored. All Victorian greenhouses include aluminum PRO210 corner L brackets (also called angle brackets or anchor posts) to be attached to the foundation base frame that extend an additional 12” below ground level. The VI 36 and 46 include an additional pair of PRO210's to use at the midpoint of the long wall. If you are in a high wind area or are trying to meet the structural specifications for a permit - you may wish to purchase additional PRO210 corner anchor posts for use at the vertical members.

Some users have chosen a variety of alternative anchoring methods based on their climate, location, soil composition, and site considerations. These include full concrete slabs, concrete footers, pier and beam constructions, and even timbers. If you are considering the use of wood in your construction, be aware that your greenhouse will likely outlast your wood. If you use pressure-treated wood, it is recommended to use a barrier material between the wood and the aluminum frame. When planning your anchoring method, you should keep in mind frost line/ground heaving, wind load, greenhouse location, ground composition, weather, climate, and local building code. If you are unsure, you should consult with a local and experienced builder. Janssens Warranty coverage does not extend to damage resulting from improper anchoring of the greenhouse outside of the manufacturer’s recommendations (see the official Janssens Assembly Manual for your greenhouse).

For the anchoring to your concrete slab or perimeter footing - there are 4 basic recommendations, in addition to the 4 or 6 corner aluminum angle PRO210 anchor posts that come with your greenhouse.

Anchoring the Corners

Preferred way: Embedding the corner anchors into your concrete.

Refer to the foundation and anchoring pages in your manual.  You can see the recommended embedded usage of the PRO210's to anchor the corners.  The most secure way to anchor the greenhouse is to embed the anchor posts into the concrete. The manufacturer recommends an 8” wide concrete strip foundation that extends down to the frost line in your area. Please consult your local building codes for this information. It is recommended to leave a 4” diameter hole at the corner for the anchors to be embedded in concrete after the greenhouse frame is assembled and it is confirmed to be level and square. You can also place a PVC pipe or Sonotube embedded into your concrete. The PVC or Sonotube should be at least 4” wide in diameter.

Alternate way: Cutting the corners anchor posts and using concrete screws.

If needed and the voids for the corner PRO210's were not included in the foundation pour, the PRO210's can be used to connect the two PRO6120's in the corner, then cut flush to the slab, and the remaining leftover parts of the PRO210 can be cut into three pieces and used as angle brackets to attach the corners to the foundation.  This assumes there is an adequate 'inside lip' on the foundation from the inside of the greenhouse frame.

Steps:

  • You will have (4) 15 3/4” long PRO210 L brackets. VI 36 & 46 will have (6) long PRO210 L Brackets
  • Cut off 4" of the PRO210 to connect the foundation frame pieces together.
  • Cut the remaining 11 3/4" into thirds and flip horizontally to mount the top half into the foundation frame and the bottom half into the concrete or other foundation.
  • Use self-tapping screws or pre-drill and use normal screws to mount the top part into the foundation frame of the greenhouse.
  • Use concrete anchor screws such as Tapcon Concrete Anchor Screws to attach the bottom part to your concrete. We HIGHLY recommend pre-drilling and using a hammer drill to drill the anchors in.

Anchoring the Walls:

Additional anchoring options along all walls, as needed for high-wind areas, securing permitting, etc.:

Embedded option 1) Use additional PRO210's embedded in the concrete perimeter (leave voids for them and pour concrete after the base frame PRO6120 is in final position and greenhouse frame is square and level). These are nice black (or green) angle brackets, and are embedded 12" into the concrete after being attached to the base frame - put one at each glazing bar/stud (PRO1456) (slightly offset if needed to avoid interfering with the PRO1456 glazing bar/stud bolt - see assembly closeups in the manual), all around the perimeter.  Count the glazing bars/studs for your greenhouse model and order the correct amount with your greenhouse order.  For example, you'll need 16 for the M34 Modern.  The 90 degree angle gives strength, but will protrude into the greenhouse space along the base frame. Contact us for the specific spacing plan for your greenhouse. For example for the M34 Modern: Exterior greenhouse corner to center of 1st PRO1456 glazing bar/stud is ~ 32”. Center of PRO1456 glazing bar/stud to center of PRO1456 glazing bar/stud is ~ 29”

Embedded option 2) Purchase your own galvanized steel or aluminum foundation anchor straps, cut into roughly 16" lengths, and bolt them into the base frame at each glazing bar/stud as above using appropriate spacing, instead of the PRO210 angles. Then embed 12" or so of each strap into your concrete (leave voids for them and pour concrete after the base frame PRO6120 is in position and greenhouse position, level, etc. is finalized). You can paint these to match your frame color and they will be nearly invisible in the interior of the greenhouse.

Non-embedded option 3) Get additional PRO210's and cut them in thirds.  Use each piece as an angle bracket to bolt the base frame to the concrete at each PRO1456 glazing bar/stud, similar to the above corner method. This is not as strong as embedding PRO210's or anchor straps into the concrete, but can be done 'after the fact' if no voids were left in the foundation pour.

Non-embedded option 4) Use long anchors into/through foundation frame. Drill access holes vertically into the top of and down through the bottom of the PRO6120 base, where each glazing bar/stud is going to attach, using the PRO1456 attachment holes as your guide. Be sure to line these up with the holes in the vertical flange so they will be covered by a vertical glazing bar/stud (PRO1456) to avoid water entry! Use appropriate long anchor fasteners for your foundation (not included).
